Iona L. Farrar

Iona L. Farrar, passed away peacefully at Nathan Littauer Extended Care on Saturday, June 4th, 2022, at 97 years young. She is the last child of the late Albert and Pauline Duross, surviving her other 5 siblings. She was born in Danby, Vermont, in 1924. Her family moved to Rockwood, NY where they grew up, then moved to Johnstown, NY. Iona graduated in the Class of 1941 where she met her sweetheart Charles Farrar and they were married on September 27, 1942 and shared 74 years together. Charles departed for Army Boot Camp a few days later. Iona followed her husband to Virginia and after his discharge from the Army they rented, then bought a home on Nare Street, Johnstown, NY where they raised their two daughters Sue Ann and Shirleen. She worked first sewing for Swears Glove Shop and Johnstown Knitting Mill for years. Iona was active in the First Methodist Church along with her family. She was a Sunday school teacher, superintendent and a member of the Methodist Women's and Couples Club. Iona was also an avid bowler and she and Chuck were members of Couples Bowling League. Iona and Chuck loved to travel the Pocono Resorts, New Jersey Coast, Cape Cod and Lake George. They enjoyed going to local plays, boating on the Sacandaga and watching their grandchildren's play sports and school activities. Iona is survived by her daughters Sue Ann (Thomas) Cichy and Shirleen Farrar; her grandchildren Julie Garnet (Mark), Jacob Cichy (Felicia), Jessica Zimmerman (Sam) and Makiko Cichy (Dan): her great grandchildren Zachary and Keegan Garnet and Kyle and Kolbe Zimmerman; also surviving many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses Donald (Nina) Duross, George (Eve) Duross, Richard Duross (Shirley), Mary Johnson/Roberts (John and Walter) and Ella Mae Oxford (Richard). Iona and her family wish to thank Kara Volmer and Staff at Pineview Commons for 8 years of loving care and the Staff at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home for her final care. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Amico Funeral Home, 150 South Main Street, Gloversville, from 1:00-2:00 pm, followed by a 2:00 pm service with Rev. Bonnie Orth. Burial will be take place in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959, Regional Animal Shelter, 117 West Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY 12078 and Brennan Humane Society, 457 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, NY 12078.
